ArchivalResource

John Williams Justice of the Peace records, 1769-1807.

Primarily promissory notes, bills and accounts, and summons collected or issued by John Williams in his role as a Justice of the Peace in Wethersfield, Connecticut, and as a judge. Also includes several letters asking Williams to serve as the person's attorney. Of most interest is a series of documents from a court case involving Francis Bulkley, master of the Schooner Hope. Bulkley bought fish from William Hatch to ship to the West Indies. Upon arrival in the West Indies, the fish were rotten and most had to be thrown overboard, so Bulkley sued Hatch for damages. The case records include depositions from seamen on board the Hope, dated 1801-1802.
